My Compassion International Sponsorship Story

Back before my junior year of college my room mate texted me with the idea of sponsoring a child through Compassion International.  I thought it was a great idea!  When we got to school in the fall we quickly signed up and picked a kid based on what we thought was a cool name.  Through praying for him, writing him letters and receiving letters back from him my life has been changed as I constantly think about this boy I’ve never met who lives halfway across the world in a totally different lifestyle than me.

Compassion International has set up this website for the next month which encourages people to share their story of how they got involved sponsoring someone with the hope that new people would feel encouraged to sponsor a child.  Through my page you are provided to sponsor a child named Aziz who lives in the same country as my child.  Give it a look.  Pray about it.  Share it.  You could make a difference in someone’s life and I guarantee it will make a difference in yours.

Child Abuse Prevention Month

The month of April is child abuse prevention month.  It gets the blue awareness ribbon (there are too many to keep track of) and was first declared in 1983.  It was reported that in 2011 that in the fifty states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico, an estimated 676,596 children were victims of child abuse; and 1,545 children died as a result of abuse or neglect.

I work with kids day in and day out that come from less than desirable home situations and live in fear of going home.  Some of them even have a past history of abuse with their families.  It is sickening.

What can you do?

-Keep an eye out for incidents, especially if you work with kids.  This website has compiled a list of numbers to call depending on your state if you suspect or want to report child abuse.

-Help spread the word.  I just found out this year that April is designated to child abuse prevention.  My local radio station is doing something crazy awesome and for a week they are broadcasting live and it is all being powered by people riding stationary bikes that provide power.  If the pedaling stops then so does the radio broadcast.  I am signed up to pedal from 8:00-9:00 PM next Thursday.  Wish me luck!

-Pray.  Pray for kids you know and pray for kids you don’t.

My radio station’s motto for this week is this: It shouldn’t hurt to be a child.  That’s so true.  Help spread the word.
