A Great Book Became A Horrible Book

When I was in 7th grade I read a book called “The Other Side of Dark” by Joan Lowry Nixon.  It was a mystery/thriller book and the main character was close in age to me at the time so maybe that helped in my liking it, but I absolutely loved it!  So much so that I went to the library for the remained of the year and only checked out books by her.  They were all so amazing, but “The Other Side of Dark” was by far my favorite.

About a month ago I remembered that book and how much I loved it so I bought it on Amazon for a few books and read through it on a road trip to Oregon.  It was horrible.  The writing was bad, it seemed to jump around and the plot seemed so forced and quick.  I was so let down to re-read it and couldn’t understand why I loved it so much.

This is one of the few books I’ve re-read, but I’m pretty sure other things I’ve read would hold up and were actually good books.  Maybe I romanticized this book so much in my mind because it is the book that really got me “excited” about reading and I didn’t really care at that time in my life about good plot or writing.

Is there a book you’ve re-read in your life and it turned out to be worse than you remembered?

To continue with my birthday post lists I am going to list some good songs about birthdays or songs to play on your birthday.

Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on how you feel about birthday music), there aren’t 25 good ones that I could think of/locate.  So here are the good ones I could find.

“Birthday” by Selena Gomez

“Birthday” by The Beatles

“In Da Club” by 50 Cent

“Birthday” by Katy Perry

“It’s My Party” by Lesley Gore

Gone Girl

I went and saw the movie Gone Girl last night.

It was the best movie I’ve seen since Guardians of the Galaxy!  Granted, I haven’t seen many movies since that one, and its only been a few months, but the past few weeks my wife and I wanted to see a movie but each week when we checked what was playing we felt they all looked truly crappy.  Gone Girl was the first movie that has looked appealing in a long time and it was really good.

I also appreciated how different it was.  It has multiple twists in it.  I even called the first one, but then it started going in a totally crazy direction that I don’t think anybody could predict.  Which is good!  I’m tired of boring movies that do the same old thing.

I would recommend checking out this movie, but be warned, the run time is two and a half hours.

Cheerio Crack recipe

This stuff is ADDICTING and so easy to make!

1/2 cup butter
1 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup corn syrup
1 teaspoon baking soda
7 cups multi grain Cheerios

Melt butter in a saucepan. Add brown sugar and corn syrup and bring to a boil. Simmer for 2 to 3 minutes, no longer. Take off heat and add baking soda. Stir until foamy and then mix into Cheerios. Stir until well blended. Dump onto a lightly greased baking sheet and bake at 250 degrees for 10 minutes. Cool and break into pieces.

I prefer to actually not bake it.  I just dump it out onto the baking sheet and let it cool.  It works either way.
