PSA: White Elephant

I just want the world to know that during a white elephant gift exchange you are supposed to give crappy & worthless items.  I have been a part of two white elephant gift exchanges so far this December and I know that I will be in at least one more next week.  Both times thus far one or more person has brought gift of actual value (a $15 Starbucks gift card and a $5 Dutch Bros. gift card) and everyone was fighting over it.  Classic Michael Scott.

You are supposed to bring junk.

My Favorite Christmas Songs & Versions

It seems that everybody has a Christmas album these days.  If you’re favorite band or artist doesn’t have one yet I can bet that they will record one at some point in their career.  It makes sense.  The songs are already written so all you have to do is record it and its guaranteed to be a pretty good seller with your fans.  There are pros and cons to this.  The downside is you are going to hear the same songs over and over all month.  The positive side is that there has to be at least one version of every song that you’ll like (unless you are a Scrooge).  This is a list of my favorite Christmas songs and the version of that song that I prefer most.

Frosty the Snowman by Michael Bublé

God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen by Relient K

Santa Claus Is Coming To Town by Justin Bieber

Holly Jolly Christmas by Burl Ives

O Holy Night by Carrie Underwood

So what are some of your favorite songs?  Share them in the comments so we can listen to them!

Love For 2014

I got a blogging assignment from Compassion International the other day to come up with a word to embody 2014.  I was originally confused and wasn’t sure I’d write on this topic.  How was I supposed to know the word that would properly embody the year?  I’m sure that nobody in 2012 thought that “selfie” would be the word of the year for 2013.

But then I decided to choose the word that I want to embody my 2014.  Kind of my 2014 mantra.  Sure, there will be some new and meaningless trend that takes over in 2014 but I want my defining word to be more meaningful.  So I have chosen the word “love”.  I want my year to be filled with love.  I want to more love than I did in 2013.  I want to love my wife more.  I want to love my family and friends more.  I want to love my job more.  I want to help lead others to show love to their peers more.

I realize that this sounds kind of cheesy.  It actually makes me think of my least favorite part of one of my favorite albums.  John Mayer’s live album Where The Light Is is an amazing album but during his cover of “Bold As Love” he bursts into this little rant that is, in my opinion, one of the dumbest things ever.  I can’t help but laugh every time it comes on.  Here is an portion of it:

“…and it’s gonna sound really corny but that’s just love. That’s just love.

I’ve done everything in my life that I’ve wanted to do except just give and feel love for my living. And I don’t mean like: Roman-candle-firework-Hollywood-hot-pink-love. I mean like: I-got-your-back-love!

I don’t need to hear I love you. You guys love me, I love you. We got that down. But some of the people who will tell you they love you, the same people who’re gonna last just have your back.

So, I’m gonna experiment with this love-thing. Giving love, feeling love. I know it sounds really corny but it’s the last thing I got to check out before I check out.”

So, as John Mayer puts it, I’m gonna experiment with this love thing in 2014.  It’s gonna be tough at times and I’m definitely going to need to rely on God a lot to get through it at times but I can really learn how to love others by viewing how He loves me.

Christmas Time Is Here

I haven’t posted in a while because I’ve been with my family in south Texas for the Thanksgiving holiday.  I thought about posting some things about being thankful and blessed or the horrors of Black Friday but instead decided to just fully invest in my time there.

Now that I’m back and it’s December it is time to focus on Christmas and all the joy that it brings.  I absolutely love Christmas time!  The decorations, trees, lights, cookies, music, movies and of course the real reason for the season (Jesus) so I’m sure I’ll be posting about a lot of stuff this month.

First up I have an album streaming below that you should check out.  It’s called Advent to Christmas by the band Page CXVI.  They are a band based out of Colorado who mainly cover hymns and I’ve been anticipating their Christmas album for quite some time now!  Give it a listen here and if you like it go buy it on iTunes or from their website.
